When the Spangler Labs team came up with String Slime it was an instant hit. Now our slime-ologists have made an exciting new kind of String Slime that is heat sensitive! You won’t believe your eyes as temperature changes the appearance of this special kind of String Slime.
You just squeeze a stream of the special blue or magenta Heat Sensitive String Slime liquid into a bowl of Activator solution and… wow! Just like original String Slime, the liquid becomes a solid! This special formulation also holds a secret. When the string reaches a certain temperature, it changes its color. That’s crazy! Do you miss your colorful strings? Stick those stringy, slimy little guys into cold water and watch them change back to blue or magenta.

String Slime works through the magic of polymers. Although String Slime starts as a liquid, through polymerization (the formation of polymers) the liquid becomes a solid and looks just like a long string. Heat Sensitive String Slime also features a thermochromic dye that reacts, quite colorfully, to changes in temperature.
What Does It Teach?
Young scientists will explore the science of building polymers by cross-linking long chains of molecules while also learning about thermochromic materials and dyes.
Science Fair Connection:
When it comes to cool science demonstrations, the Heat Sensitive Strings are pretty awesome. Unfortunately, a cool demonstration doesn’t always equate to a great science fair project. Thankfully, all you need to do is identify and change a variable, or factor that can be altered, to create a science fair project that won’t be forgotten. A couple variables that you could use include:
Find the quickest way to cool or heat the String Slime to its color-changing temperature.
Test different (cold) liquids to see which cools the strings to their color-changing point.
Those are just a couple of different variable options to choose from, but we’re sure you could think of more to make the Heat Sensitive String Slime a science fair project. No matter what you choose, make sure that you keep all factors (except your variable) the same during each experiment.
