At Steve Spangler Science, we love experiments to fizz and go pop! When we want to add some “fizzing” magic, we turn to Flat Fizzers. Just drop a tablet into a liquid and you’ll witness a barrage of carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles as they’re released from the tablet. These tablets are perfect for performing experiments like our Flying Film Canisters… resulting in just the right amount of POP! Did we mention they’re 100% nontoxic and non-medicated? They’re ideal for young, inquisitive minds!

How Does It Work?
The fizzing you see when you drop a Flat Fizzer tablet in water is the same sort of fizzing that you see when you mix baking soda and vinegar. The acid mixes with the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to produce bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. If you look at the ingredients for Flat Fizzer tablets, you will find that it contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). When you drop the tablet in water, the acid and the baking soda react to produce carbon dioxide gas.
What Does It Teach?
Fizzers are great teaching aids. They’re non-toxic! That means that they’re safe for all ages (with parental guidance, of course). There is no medication contained in the tablet. Instead, you have only what’s necessary for a completely safe acid-base chemical reaction: sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. The resulting tablet is a fun way to show acid-base interaction, air pressure (when accompanied by our Flying Film Canisters), or whatever you can find a use for in your home or classroom.
